University of New Mexico
The University of New Mexico is a long-standing partner site of the South Central AIDS and Education Training Center (SCAETC), active since 1988 and administered through Project ECHO and the UNM Health Sciences Center. It hosts the annual New Mexico HIV/HCV Update Conference and provides ongoing in-person and ECHO-based trainings for healthcare teams serving people living with or at risk for HIV.
The ECHO Model is a telementoring approach, not telemedicine—clinicians retain responsibility for patient care while receiving guided support. These ECHO sessions engage a wide range of professionals: clinicians, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, behavioral health providers, peer educators, and community health workers. Participants learn through case presentations, shared discussion, and interprofessional collaboration, with emphasis on practical evaluation and management of patient cases.
The center offers multiple learning opportunities:
- ECHO programs: Weekly HIV sessions and monthly Indian Country HIV sessions. Continuing education credits are provided at no cost. Register here
- Clinical Preceptorships: Clinic-based training for all Licensed Healthcare Professionals providing direct one-on-one clinical training with experienced HIV clinical faculty
- Clinical Consultations: Provider driven requests for information regarding HIV/AIDS care that are answered by experts in various specialized fields.
- Technical Assistance: Resolution of organizational or programmatic issues about HIV service delivery.
- Practice Transformation: Clinic-based training for organizational capacity building.
