Mental Health and HIV
A diagnosis of HIV is often an emotionally significant event that can be particularly challenging for individuals with co-occurring mental health conditions or substance use disorders. Patients newly diagnosed with HIV often benefit from the support of providers who understand the psychosocial challenges associated with HIV, including stigma, mental health concerns, and substance use, which can affect engagement in care and treatment adherence.
In addition, HIV and certain opportunistic infections can affect the central nervous system, potentially leading to cognitive, behavioral, or mood changes. These symptoms may be further complicated in individuals with substance use disorders and should prompt careful assessment and, when appropriate, referral to mental health or addiction specialists.
When identified early, these conditions are often effectively managed through a combination of counseling, psychiatric care, and treatment for substance use disorders. Integrating behavioral health and addiction services into HIV care can significantly improve patient outcomes. Your local AIDS
Education and Training Center (AETC) site can provide training and connect you with providers experienced in supporting individuals with newly diagnosed HIV, including addressing mental health and substance use needs.
